When to go

When to visit Guilin and Yangshuo.

The peaks stand all year; the river level, the light and the crowds do not. Here is the honest calendar, trade by trade.

  • September – NovemberThe reliable window

    The rain tails off, humidity drops, and the clearest light of the year lands on a river still full from summer. In early autumn the osmanthus blooms — Guilin is named for the tree. One caveat: 1–7 October is the National Day holiday, the busiest travel week of the Chinese year. We plan around it.

  • April – JuneGreen, and it costs

    The karst at its greenest and the mist at its moodiest — this is when the ink painting actually happens. It happens because of rain: May and June are the wettest months, and a downpour can claim an afternoon. We build the days flexible and keep a dry plan in reserve.

  • July – AugustHigh summer

    Full river, deep green, and the two hottest, stickiest, busiest months — Chinese school holidays fill the boats and thunderstorms pass through most afternoons. Workable, if the mornings do the heavy lifting and the midday hours stay in the shade.

  • December – MarchLow water, honestly

    Quiet, cool, and often wrapped in a fine grey mist that suits the landscape. But the river runs at its lowest — in a dry winter the long cruise can be shortened or rerouted — and the green thins out. Short Xingping outings also depend on operating conditions. Beautiful in a spare way; we will say so plainly if these are your dates.

The river, two ways

Li River cruise or Xingping: choose your river day.

Every Li River day comes down to one choice, and most travellers are never shown it. Here it is, with our thumb on the scale.

  • The Li River cruiseGuilin → Yangshuo · about 4 hours

    The big boats leave Guilin’s piers mid-morning in convoy and reach Yangshuo in the early afternoon, covering every mile of the famous gorge with lunch on board. Completeness is the argument for it. Against it: you share the deck, the light is midday-flat, and the finest bends arrive with everyone else’s boat in the frame.

  • A shorter Xingping outingA selected stretch · timing confirmed before booking

    Xingping puts you close to the river scenery on the twenty-yuan note. A shorter river outing gives you a selected stretch of the landscape and more time for Yangshuo’s villages, rather than the full Guilin-to-Yangshuo route. We confirm the boat or raft option, duration and boarding time for your dates. Early light can be enjoyed from the riverbank; it does not promise a dawn sailing.

River operations depend on water levels and official notices; an outing may be rescheduled or replaced if conditions change. See the Li River authority’s water-level notice for an example of how navigation is managed.

One more honest note: the cormorant fishermen you may see at dawn are mostly retired fishermen who now pose for photographers — the lamps and the birds are real, the fishing is theatre. It is still a beautiful hour. You should simply know what you are looking at.

Yangshuo · after the boats

Yulong River rafting and countryside cycling.

Most visitors meet Yangshuo for three crowded hours around lunch and conclude it is a tourist town. Stay a night or two outside it, among the paddies toward the Yulong River, and the arithmetic reverses: the lanes empty, the peaks go violet, and the mornings belong to farmers and early cyclists. This is the Yangshuo countryside the postcards keep promising — and the quiet heart of our honeymoon route, for good reason.

  • The Yulong River by punted bamboo raft — the motorless river, taken early, before the queue at the weirs
  • Bicycles or e-bikes on the farm lanes between the villages, the paddies and Moon Hill
  • A market walk and a farmhouse cooking lunch — beer fish is the local argument worth having
  • Xianggong Hill for the high view over the river’s bends, twenty minutes of steps
  • Rooms outside town, facing the peaks — not on West Street
  • One evening on West Street if you are curious — it is loud, neon and cheerful, and one evening is enough

About Impression Liu Sanjie: Zhang Yimou’s night spectacle puts some six hundred performers on the river itself, and it is genuinely something. It is also two thousand seats, loudspeakers and crowds. Some travellers love it; others prefer the river dark and a long dinner. We will ask which you are, and book — or not — accordingly.

Sleeping by the river rather than in Guilin city is the whole trick — dawn belongs to whoever is already there. Three days covers the essentials; the fourth buys the slowness this landscape is actually for.

  • Day 1 — Arrive in Guilin, by air or by rail from Hong Kong or Guangzhou. Drive out to sleep near Xingping, so tomorrow’s dawn is ten minutes away, not ninety.
  • Day 2 — An early look at Xingping’s river scenery, with the river outing timed to the confirmed operating schedule, then on to Yangshuo. An unscheduled afternoon; evening among the paddies.
  • Day 3 — The Yulong River early, punted not motored, then bicycles through the villages. Impression Liu Sanjie after dark, or a long dinner instead.
  • Day 4 — A slow morning, then onward: connect via Kunming for the Yunnan journey, subject to transport schedules, or depart through Guilin.

Questions we hear often.

Cruise boat or bamboo raft?

Both are options we can arrange. The Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise takes about four hours and includes lunch on board, with shared decks and scheduled departures. A shorter Xingping river outing concentrates on one section of the karst scenery and leaves more time for the countryside. The right choice depends on your dates, comfort needs and the operating schedule. We confirm the route and boarding time before booking; a dawn departure or empty river is not guaranteed.

Best season for the Li River?

September to November is the honest answer: the rain tails off, the light clears, and the river is still full. April to June is greener and moodier — the classic mist — but it is mist because it rains, and May and June are the wettest months. Summer is hot, humid and busy with school holidays. Winter is quiet but low on water; in a dry year the long cruise can be shortened. The one week to avoid outright is 1–7 October, the National Day holiday.

Is Yangshuo worth staying overnight?

Overnight is the point. Day-trippers see the town at its worst — the crowded hours around lunch — and leave before the reasons to come: dawn mist on the Yulong, empty farm lanes, peaks turning violet at dusk. All of it happens after the buses have gone. Stay outside town among the paddies rather than on West Street, and give it two nights if you can.

How to combine with Yunnan?

A Guilin and Yangshuo stay can be combined with Yunnan in roughly ten to twelve days, depending on the places you choose and your travel pace. Kunming is a useful onward gateway. We check the flight or rail options for your dates before setting the route, and leave time around transfers rather than treating every travel day as a sightseeing day.
