China Visa-Free Travel in 2026:
The Complete Guide

China is more open than it has been in decades. Most Western travelers can now enter without any visa at all — here's exactly what applies to your passport, updated for 2026.

The Short Version

There are two policies that matter to most travelers:

PolicyWho It's ForHow LongConditions
30-Day Visa-Free Entry UK, most EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Brazil, Saudi Arabia + more (40+ countries) Up to 30 days Just arrive. Passport valid 6+ months. Covers tourism, business, family visits.
240-Hour (10-Day) Visa-Free Transit United States, Mexico, plus ~55 countries total Up to 10 days Enter at a designated port (Chengdu ✓) with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region — Hong Kong counts.
What this means in practice: a British family can fly into Chengdu and travel China for a month with zero paperwork. An American couple can fly in, spend 10 full days exploring Sichuan, then fly out via Hong Kong, Tokyo or Seoul — no visa, no embassy visit, no fees.

240-Hour Transit: How US Travelers Use It

The US isn't on the 30-day list, but the 240-hour transit policy is nearly as good for a Sichuan trip:

  • Fly into Chengdu (TFU) — a designated port with direct flights from many international hubs.
  • Stay up to 10 days — enough for any of our routes, including the 7-day West Sichuan road trip with buffer days.
  • Fly out to a third country or region — Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore and Bangkok all count. A US→Chengdu→Hong Kong→US routing qualifies.
  • What you need: passport valid 6+ months, confirmed onward ticket, and a standard arrival card. The clock starts at midnight after your arrival day.

What If My Country Isn't Eligible?

No problem — we provide full visa support for travelers from all countries: invitation letters, itinerary confirmations, hotel booking proofs, and step-by-step guidance through the application. We've helped travelers from India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, South Africa and many other countries get their tourist visas smoothly.

Before You Fly: The 5-Minute China Prep List

  • Download Alipay and WeChat before arrival and link an international card — it's how everything is paid for in China. Both now work smoothly with foreign cards.
  • Install a VPN before departure if you want Google, WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook during your trip.
  • Get an eSIM or local SIM — order an eSIM online before you fly, or pick up a SIM at the airport.
  • Bring a power bank — your phone is your wallet, map and translator here.
  • Book with someone on the ground. Train tickets, park reservations and hotels in China work differently. That's literally our job — and our advice is free.
