This luxury China itinerary uses fourteen calendar days and thirteen nights: four in Beijing, two in Xi’an, one in Guilin, three in Yangshuo and three in Shanghai. It includes the international arrival and departure days. The Guilin night makes the downstream river cruise practical; Yangshuo then becomes the countryside base rather than a day trip with a long return.
It suits a first visit with an interest in history, landscapes and food. Private vehicles and locally guided days reduce coordination, while unbooked half-days protect your energy. You will still walk through large sites and share public attractions with other visitors. Comfort depends on honest pacing, suitable arrangements and clear expectations.
Day by day
Travel and rest are part of the plan.
Day 2
Make the palace the main visit, subject to the official reservation and opening calendar. A short surrounding walk can follow. Swap this day with the city day if closures or reservations require it; do not add a second large museum.
Day 3
Choose a section and walking distance that suit your group. Travel out, explore, have lunch and return with a margin for traffic. Even where mechanical access is available, steps and uneven surfaces remain. Keep the evening free.
Day 4
Choose a hutong walk or Temple of Heaven morning, then leave the afternoon open. This is also the weather buffer for the Wall. The Summer Palace can replace the city morning if garden time matters more to you.
Day 5
Compare a suitable high-speed train with flying using the actual date and door-to-door time. Either way, protect most of the day for the journey. A short city-wall view or dinner is optional after arrival.
Day 6
Visit at your confirmed reservation time, allowing for road travel and walking within the museum complex. Return for a restful afternoon or a short food-focused evening. Add another major site only if everyone actively wants it.
Day 7
Plan this as a full transfer day. Check whether a useful direct service operates on your date; if not, compare a connection or revise the order. A long rail journey is not treated as a quick replacement. Stay in Guilin for the river departure.
Day 8
Transfer to the confirmed pier, take the Li River cruise and continue to your Yangshuo base. Coordinate luggage and the arrival pickup in advance. The cruise and transfers form the day; do not add a timed evening performance by default.
Day 9
Choose a short walk, a suitable cycle route or a landscape outing by road. Build in shade, seating and a long lunch. Keep the afternoon available for reading, independent time or an optional activity confirmed in advance.
Day 10
Use this as a rest day or a second countryside outing. It gives the Guilin section room to respond to rain or river changes. If a long excursion matters to you, discuss the driving and walking before committing.
Day 11
Allow for the road journey from Yangshuo to Guilin airport, the flight and the onward city transfer. Confirm flight availability before fixing this sequence. The Bund is a possibility after arrival, not an obligation.
Day 12
Spend the morning on architecture and the riverfront, then choose old-city lanes or tree-lined neighbourhoods. Leave space before dinner. A private guide helps connect the stories without trying to show every district in one day.
Day 13
Choose a museum, food walk or a nearby water-town day trip. Each is an alternative, not a cumulative list. Staying in Shanghai this evening also creates a useful buffer before the international flight.
Day 14
Check the airport and terminal, allow the required check-in buffer and keep the route to the airport clear. If departure is late, a short local outing can be considered after luggage and transfer arrangements are settled.
What needs confirming
Private planning does not bypass public rules.
The Palace Museum’s official visitor page lists opening information and closure notices; it generally closes on Mondays outside public holidays. The Terracotta Warriors’ official ticket guidance requires real-name reservations and entry in the booked time slot. We plan around available admissions and the documents required, without promising privileged access.
The Li River authority describes the classic cruise as one-way to Yangshuo and approximately four hours on the water. Transfers add time. River navigation can be affected by water conditions, so the current operating route must be reconfirmed and an alternative retained.
Make it your route
Spend extra time where it matters.
For less movement, remove Xi’an and distribute those days between Beijing and Yangshuo; do not fill the saved time with more day trips. For art, design and food, give Shanghai a longer stay. Couples who prefer a smaller route can start with the ten-day Shanghai and Guilin itinerary.

Is fourteen days enough for these four regions?
Yes when you allow full transfer days and avoid adding more cities. This outline includes arrival, departure and rest time. If you want a very slow trip, remove Xi’an or extend the duration.
Does a luxury private tour include skipping queues?
Private planning can organise logistics and reservations, but it does not remove official security, admission rules or shared queues. Any separately available service must be confirmed specifically.
Are all transport connections guaranteed?
No. Flights and train schedules are date-dependent. The route is confirmed only after checking useful departures, airport or station transfers and connection buffers.
