This ten-day China honeymoon plan uses two regions and nine nights: three in Shanghai, one in Guilin, four in Yangshuo and one back in Shanghai. Returning to Shanghai before the international departure protects the last day from a tight domestic connection. The first and last days are travel days, so the plan works even when your flights do not leave a full sightseeing day.
Choose it if you prefer rivers, food and time as a couple to a checklist of monuments. Shanghai brings architecture and late dinners; Guilin provides a practical starting point for the downstream cruise; Yangshuo gives you a countryside base. This is a suggested route to adapt once flights and seasonal conditions are known.
Day by day
Travel and rest are part of the plan.
Day 2
Explore the Bund with a guide, then choose one contrasting area: the old city or the tree-lined streets of the former French Concession. Leave the afternoon free before a dinner you can enjoy without watching the clock.
Day 3
Select a museum, food walk or design-focused neighbourhood morning. Keep the rest open for browsing and cafés. A nearby water town is an alternative full-day outing; it replaces the city day rather than being added to it.
Day 4
Treat this as a transfer day. Confirm the suitable Shanghai airport, flight and Guilin arrival time before arranging anything else. Once in Guilin, settle in and take a short riverside stroll if conditions allow. Save your longest dinner for another evening.
Day 5
Use the downstream cruise as the main experience. Arrange transport to the confirmed departure pier and an agreed plan for luggage and the Yangshuo arrival transfer. After disembarking, leave the remaining afternoon quiet instead of driving back to Guilin.
Day 6
Explore a manageable stretch of countryside by foot or bicycle, matched to your comfort and local conditions. Start early if it is warm, stop for lunch and finish before it becomes an endurance day. Cycling is optional; short walks with road transfers work too.
Day 7
Keep this day for a slow breakfast, reading or revisiting a view. It can also absorb a weather change from the river day. Optional cooking or craft activities require advance confirmation, so choose one together rather than committing to a full programme.
Day 8
Choose a short landscape outing or a discreet photography session around suitable light. Agree a rain plan and a private communication channel if this is a surprise. Keep the evening flexible; a meaningful meal does not need another long drive.
Day 9
Travel by road to the confirmed Guilin departure airport, then fly to Shanghai. Count the road transfer, check-in and arrival journey as part of the day. A final dinner is possible after an early arrival, but is never the reason to book a risky connection.
Day 10
Allow time for the correct airport and terminal. Shanghai has more than one airport: the domestic arrival and international departure may differ. Keep the morning free of timed attractions and depart with the buffer your airline requires.
Guilin honeymoon planning
A river cruise and a quiet countryside day do different jobs.
The official Li River route guidance describes the classic cruise as a one-way journey to Yangshuo taking about four hours. That is time on the river, not the whole outing: pier transfers, boarding and disembarkation extend the day. Do not confuse this cruise with a short raft excursion, which has separate operating arrangements.
Water conditions can change services; the scenic authority has published navigation suspension and reopening notices. We reconfirm the operating route close to travel and keep an on-land alternative. Four nights in Yangshuo make that adjustment easier than a one-night stop.
Adjust the plan
Keep the pace; change the emphasis.
For more city time, move a Yangshuo night to Shanghai. For a landscape-first honeymoon, shorten the opening city stay and keep the free day in the countryside. If your onward flight is from Guangzhou or Hong Kong, compare a different exit route only after checking timetables, connection buffers and your entry documents. Do not assume a through-ticket exists.
For history as well as scenery, extend the trip and use the 14-day Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin and Shanghai route. If you have only seven days, remove a region or use an onward departure that genuinely works. Compressing all ten days usually removes the quiet that makes this a honeymoon.

Tell us about dietary needs, motion sickness, walking limits and whether both partners want the same level of activity. We also need your international flight outline: a “ten-day holiday” counted from departure at home may give you fewer than ten days in China.
