China family vacation · 10 days · two bases

Ten days in China.
Two cities, time to settle.

Start with the rhythm

A first China trip without a third-city squeeze.

This 10-day China family itinerary uses Beijing for imperial history and the Great Wall, then Chengdu for pandas and ordinary city life. It is a planning example, not a report of a completed guest trip. It assumes arrival in Beijing on Day 1 and departure from Chengdu on Day 10; international flights are not ten extra days outside the schedule.

The suggested rhythm suits school-age children who enjoy animals and stories, with shorter versions for younger siblings or grandparents. Dates, walking comfort and actual transport availability can change the order. If your international flights require returning to Beijing, Day 9 becomes a return-transfer day and the Chengdu programme gets shorter. We would rebuild that version before you commit.

Suggested route

The day-by-day family route

Day 1 · Arrive in BeijingArrival and recovery

Keep the arrival day for the airport transfer, a simple meal and a short neighbourhood walk if everyone feels awake. A delayed flight should cost a walk, not a timed landmark reservation. Avoid using a sleepless morning to start a full sightseeing programme.

Day 2 · A focused Forbidden City visitOne main visit

Choose a short palace route with a few stories children can follow, then stop for lunch. Leave the afternoon free; a brief park visit is optional. The palace day moves if the calendar or ticket availability requires it. Do not add the entire central Beijing checklist.

Day 3 · The Great WallA full excursion day

Reserve the day for travel to the chosen Wall section, a manageable walk, lunch and the return journey. Start with the Mutianyu versus Badaling comparison, then select access around the family. Cable transport can reduce climbing, but the Wall itself still has steps and uneven surfaces.

Day 4 · Hutongs and breathing roomShort morning, open afternoon

Take a short hutong walk with a food stop, letting children notice bikes, doorways and daily life. Keep the afternoon unbooked. This is also the first weather buffer: the Wall and this lighter day may swap if reservations and local conditions allow.

Day 5 · Beijing to ChengduTravel day

Choose a flight or a train after comparing the whole journey: packing, station or airport access, check-in, waiting and onward transfer. This is a long-distance move, not a spare sightseeing morning. Plan an easy meal on arrival and leave the evening free.

Day 6 · Chengdu panda morningAnimals, then rest

Use the reserved entry period for a selected part of the panda base instead of walking every zone. Stop for water and seated breaks, and leave before attention fades. The afternoon is for rest. Animal viewing depends on husbandry and weather; no individual panda appearance is promised.

Day 7 · A gentle Chengdu dayCity life

Try a short park and teahouse visit, with a straightforward lunch and time to do very little. A short cooking or craft activity can replace the walk if a suitable provider confirms availability, language, age requirements and dietary needs. It is an optional request, not an included guarantee.

Day 8 · Choose one extra interestOne choice

Families keen on history can request a museum visit, subject to its booking rules. Others may prefer another small neighbourhood outing. A Dujiangyan excursion can be discussed for energetic children, but it replaces this gentle day and requires a separate walking and transfer review.

Day 9 · A genuine free dayProtect the margin

Sleep later, return to a favourite place or leave the day empty. It can absorb a changed activity if a suitable slot remains available. Packing and a relaxed final meal count as a good day. Do not automatically convert this buffer into another distant excursion.

Day 10 · Depart ChengduDeparture

Allow for the airport transfer, check-in and your actual international flight. No major sight is scheduled. If departure is early, prepare the previous evening; if late, keep any final walk close and easy to abandon.

Adapt the pace

Children’s ages change the details.

For preschool children, shorten the palace visit and preserve the afternoon rest every day. A stroller can help on some city paths, but it does not make historic thresholds or the Great Wall step-free. For older children, add a focused history or food theme within the existing day instead of adding a new city.

For grandparents, describe comfortable walking time, steps and boarding needs in the first brief. Separate activities require their own supervision and staffing plan; one guide cannot simultaneously accompany two groups in different places. Ask about the appropriate vehicle and child restraints before confirming transport.

Food and practical details

Make the brief specific.

Tell us which foods must be avoided and how strictly. We can request written dietary confirmation from selected suppliers and discuss a translated allergy card; neither a translated request nor a private guide guarantees an allergen-free kitchen. Keep an agreed meal plan and familiar alternatives.

Keep a small day bag with water, weather layers and what the children normally need between meals. For rail or air travel, reserve time for luggage and identity checks. The most useful pace question is how long each person enjoys being out, rather than how many landmarks fit on a map.

Official access checks

Confirm the date before fixing the order.

The Palace Museum booking page states that advance booking is required and Mondays are normally closed outside statutory holidays. The Mutianyu visitor notice warns that severe weather can close facilities or parts of the site. These checks can move Days 2–4.

The Panda Base visitor guidance explains that animal care and weather can change viewing access. Use its official ticket information for the applicable reservation procedure. Official sources checked 26 September 2026; recheck notices for your travel dates.

Good to know

Questions we hear often.

Is ten days enough for Beijing and Chengdu with kids?

Yes, this suggested two-base plan counts arrival, one intercity transfer and departure within the ten days. It leaves a lighter Beijing day and a Chengdu free day. Actual flights and the children’s ages decide whether the order works.

Should we add Shanghai or Guilin?

A third region would use some of the rest time and add another move. For a family prioritising the Great Wall and pandas, we suggest testing the two-city route first. Add days if a third region is a priority.

Does the route include every listed activity?

No. This is a suggested itinerary. Reservations, transport, guiding, supplier availability and any optional activity must be set out in the agreed written plan.

What if our flight home leaves from Beijing?

Use Day 9 to return to Beijing and remove a Chengdu activity if needed. A separate intercity return should not be treated as a small addition to the international departure day.
