Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong share an airport and a mountain road, so almost everyone who visits one asks about the other. The useful question is not which is “better”; it is which one deserves the day you have.

The real decision point
Jiuzhaigou rises from roughly 2,000 metres at the entrance to just over 3,000 metres near Long Lake. Huanglong’s boardwalk reaches about 3,550 metres, and you stay at that height for several hours.
The practical difference is easy to feel. Someone can leave Chengdu at around 500 metres, arrive in the mountains and find that a short flight of steps has become a negotiation with their breathing. Most people are not in danger; the day simply stops being enjoyable when the route has asked too much too soon.
Put Jiuzhaigou first and Huanglong on the return day.Sleep lower, walk the valley at a measured pace, then use the cable car at Huanglong rather than climbing from the bottom. Carry water, keep an oxygen cylinder in the vehicle as a precaution, and leave space in the schedule to turn around. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should speak with a doctor before a high-altitude route and tell us early so we can shape the days around it.
If you have three days
They sit on the same travel line but feel far enough apart that the second landscape does not feel like a repeat. Start lower, give Jiuzhaigou the full day, and keep Huanglong for the final morning.

This is a shape, not a fixed package. The right version starts with your dates, the people travelling with you and how everyone usually responds to altitude.
Season changes the answer
April–mid May
Snowmelt feeds the terraces and gives the pools their strongest colour. Jiuzhaigou is fresh and green, but it has not reached its famous autumn palette. If spring gives you one day, Huanglong has the sharper visual edge.
Mid October–early November
Autumn colour is the picture people travel for. Huanglong is still beautiful, but these weeks belong to Jiuzhaigou; if you have two days, both are at their best and the choice becomes easy.
December–March
Huanglong usually closes for the season and upper paths can freeze. Jiuzhaigou remains open, often with very few visitors. Snow around the blue pools is a different kind of beauty, not a lesser version of autumn.
The honest rule
If you have one day, arrive from Chengdu that same morning and have never been to altitude, choose Jiuzhaigou. Running both viewpoints in a single day turns the road and your breathing into the main event. With two or more days, do both. In spring, give Huanglong extra weight; in autumn, start with Jiuzhaigou. With children or older parents, the lower valley is usually the kinder choice. In winter, plan around Jiuzhaigou.
The difference is rarely about the ticket or the headline view. It is about how much time you have after the journey, how your group moves, and whether the weather gives you room to slow down. A route that leaves a spare hour is more memorable than one that technically fits every landmark.
The 90-second decision
One day and a first high-altitude trip: Jiuzhaigou. Two or more days: do both. Spring: Huanglong matters more. Autumn: Jiuzhaigou first. Children or parents: Jiuzhaigou. Winter: Jiuzhaigou is the practical choice.

Good to know
Jiuzhaigou. It is larger, gives you more to see, and is gentler for a first high-altitude day. The valley uses boardwalks and park shuttles rather than one sustained climb. Huanglong works best when it is already on your route and you can give it a half day without taking away your only full day in Jiuzhaigou.
Three days is the comfortable shape: one travel day into the region, one full day in Jiuzhaigou, and one morning for Huanglong before returning to Chengdu. Two days can work with careful flights and a shorter Huanglong visit, but it leaves little room for weather, delayed transport or a slower pace at altitude.
Stay in Jiuzhaigou first and leave Huanglong for the return day. Jiuzhaigou is lower, so sleeping around 2,000 metres gives your body a night to adjust before you spend several hours near 3,550 metres. We do not recommend going straight from lowland Chengdu to Huanglong on the same day for a first high-altitude trip.
Huanglong usually closes for the winter season, and upper boardwalks may close earlier when ice and snow arrive. Jiuzhaigou generally remains open from December to March, with snow-framed pools and far fewer visitors. If your dates are in winter, Jiuzhaigou is the realistic choice; we will check the operating notice before confirming a route.
